Hair fall is a very common problem in today’s world. Previously we used to associate hair fall and baldness with old age but now this problem is common in every age group. Men and women in large numbers are victims of this problem. There can be numerous underlying reasons for hair fall. They can be genetic, lack of proper nutrition, medication, serious disease, infections, drug intake & trauma. There is no proven solution to stop hair fall. too much of hair fall may lead to baldness. There is no natural cure to baldness so far. But, there are surgical procedures like hair transplantation to cover baldness. In this post I am going to share few informations about hair transplantation.

What is hair transplantation?

Hair transplantation is a popular surgical method nowadays to cover baldness. It has been performed in US as early as 1950s to transplant hair from one part of the body to the balding part to cover the site with hair. Hair transplant can be also used to transplant hairs to eyebrows, beards etc.

How is it performed?

Hair transplants are carried out in clinics under expert surgeons. Hair transplant can take single to multiple sessions depending on the hair pattern, area of transplant etc. Local anesthesia is performed on the patient before carrying out the surgery. Here are the steps below for hair transplantation through FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction):
•Firstly, hair from both the receiver and doner area is cleaned with anti-bacterial solution. Then anesthetic is injected to the area from where the hair will be removed
•Individual follicles consisting of one to four hairs are removed from this area
• Then the receiver area is punctured with with fine needles where these hairs are individually placed in a regular pattern
•Once these hairs are implanted in the receiver site, the wounds are allowed to heal, this may take up to 7-10 days
•Hairs will usually start to grow between 3-6 months of the transplantation

Post transplantation care

•Depending on the diameter of punctures made, the wounds can take time to heal. Pain killers pescribed by the doctor is needed to be taken from time to time
•Shampooing the hair is usually started in a couple of days from the surgery
•Hair cap should be worn while going out to avoid heat and dust
•Post surgery , initial hair fall takes place from the newly transplanted area due to “shock loss” but new hairs will start growing out as early as three months from the date of surgery.

Possible side effects

There are no bigger side effects after hair transplants. Some minor side effects includes itching, initial hair loss, swelling and in worse case puss formation. But all these can be treated with proper medication and care and there are no serious harm due to this problems.

On whom hair transplantation cannot be performed?

Hair transplant may seem a very good and useful method to regain hair but there are some limitations to this surgery too. This surgery is not performed on people below 25 years of age dealing with hair loss, on diabetic patients and patients with cardiac problems.

How much do hair transplants cost?

Hair transplant cost depends upon the type and area of transplantation. The price may approximately vary from Rs 40 to Rs. 100 per graft.
